With SalonQP being Britain’s only fine-watch fair it seems fitting that it is hosted at the prestigious Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea. The fair, now in its fifth year boasts a fantastic selection of the top watchmakers with over 70 brands partaking in the event and has become a staple in the luxury events calendar. From Grandes Maisons to top independent watchmakers the fair features debut pieces from existing brands as well as the launch of all-new makers. The show has been fantastically put together with top Swiss watch brands mixed in with weird and wonderful independent makers and of course Britain’s finest.
Jaeger-LeCoultre chose the occasion to celebrate their 180th birthday with a beautiful time capsule containing its oeuvre: women’s designs, old and new. This includes the beautiful miniature Calibre 101 movement set into a bracelet and worn by the Queen at her Coronation. Hermès presented its 2013 version of Le Temps Suspendu for the first time in Britain. The watch follows the 2011 model which was named Best Men’s watch at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève.
This clever event catered for watch fanatics appealing to buyers who wanted something glamorous on their arm as well as anyone wishing to find out a little more about how this symbol of artistry can create such an obsession. The array of quality craftsmanship that was on display was really quite fantastic. Demonstrations on stone setting with Jaeger-LeCoultre, assembly of a watch face by Chopard and how the mechanisms are put together by Tag Heuer, gave a real insight into the science and skill behind the masterpieces.
Being able to work with precision on very delicate and tiny pieces to assemble the perfect watch, it seems more than a coincidence that the German watch makers Nomos and A. Lange & Söhne base their workshops in ‘Glashütte’ (literally meaning glass house.)
SalonQP really is a highlight on the luxury events calendar. It is a rare occasion where you can see the love, detail and imagination that goes into these fine creations. It is incredible to admire the precision of their assembly and the craftsmanship of everything including the leather strap of a Hermès watch. We look forward to seeing what SalonQP have up their sleeve in 2014!
